Have you ever caught yourself looking at someone else’s work, wishing that you could make that? Have you ever looked down upon what you have done after seeing what someone else’s work?
This caused my comparison induced self-pity today!
The comparison game is a dangerous slippery slope. It will either catapult you into pride or cause you to make your home in the land of self-pity. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be in either place.
I’m just me. I will never become someone else. At the end of the day, I will always be me. And you will always be you. And what is wrong with that? A thumb will never become an eye. It just doesn’t have the right parts for the job. And yet if we lost either an eye or a thumb, we would have to relearn how to do even the simplest of daily tasks. To compare the importance of the two would just be silly; we are thankful for both of them equally.
I have a unique group of talents and gifts, as do you. It is up to us to use what we have been given to create something beautiful and bless people’s lives. Allowing ourselves to wishfully long for another person’s gifts will not help us accomplish anything in this life. In fact, we won’t even be able to effective use what gifts we do have if we are always longing for someone else’s talents.
Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life. (Galatians 6:4-5, The Message)
The challenge for all of us today is to take a serious look at our own gifts and talents. Be thankful for what we have been given and find ways to put them to use to bless others. Let the comparison game stop with us.
